Marzia Colonna began her artistic career as a sculptor and
is a Member of the Royal British Sculptors to this day. Her public commissions
are on display in many locations across the UK including Salisbury Cathedral,
Sherborne Abbey and the National Sailing Academy. The selection of works
presented here all relate to womanhood. In ‘Chrysalis’ a butterfly takes the
form of a young woman emerging from the pupa. It symbolises a transitional
state; metamorphosis from self-conscious adolescence to adulthood. Of ‘Young
Venus’ Colonna writes: “Here is a young beauty: Venus emerging from the water
to embrace a new life as an adult; she stands upright and alone.”. Lastly in
‘Encounter’ Colonna imagined the impact on a young man coming across a larger
than life female nude on a pedestal and the effect that encounter might have on
him, and the role of women in his life.
