Portland Gallery are leading dealers in Modern and Contemporary British art. Our two-floor gallery in St James’s hosts up to fourteen exhibitions a year; largely solo presentations of work by our represented artists and estates. Founded in 1984 by Tom Hewlett, the gallery swiftly developed a reputation as leading dealers in the Scottish Colourists whilst also representing notable estates. We continue to enjoy long and successful relationships with our existing contemporary artists. Tom retired from Portland Gallery in April 2022 and the gallery is now under the directorship of Jamie Anderson and Rollo Uloth. The gallery is run as an Employee Ownership Trust (E.O.T.) with all staff, or beneficiaries, sharing in the success of our business.
Throughout the history of the gallery, our exhibition programme has concentrated primarily in representing the best modern and contemporary figurative artists working in traditional media. In parallel, Portland have enjoyed considerable success as dealers in abstract paintings and sculptures by some of the most prominent figures of 20th century British Art. In the future, we are looking to develop our exhibition programme while consolidating what has made the gallery so successful in the past. Key to this will be maintaining our close working relationships with the artists and estates we currently represent.
Portland Gallery act as advisors to many private collectors and public institutions. We are able to offer support and advice to novice collectors, helping them to navigate the sometimes daunting waters of the art market. We also provide expert in-depth market analysis to experienced collectors looking to refine and shape existing collections. We can provide valuation services, advice of conservation and framing issues, and provide assistance with logistics, cataloguing and collection management.
Portland Gallery participates regularly at leading art fairs including Masterpiece, the London Art Fair and the British Art Fair. We are members of the Society of London Art Dealers.
