Frances Macdonald: New Paintings

Overview

Frances Macdonald has been a cornerstone of Portland Gallery’s exhibition programme for well over 20 years. Her painting has proven to be enduring popular with our collectors, and to them her work requires no further introduction. Frances’s work remains primarily focused on the exploration of the Inner Hebridean coastline. She is not so much a landscape painter, but rather a painter of a particular landscape. Frances has devoted her career to capturing the nuances of her Crinan home and Iona retreat, and it is this acute observation of a particular place over time that gives her work such power. The ever-capricious weather of those regions creates an endless source of inspiration and the challenge of depicting a fleeting ray of sun, a gust of wind, or the crash of a wave, makes each composition truly singular.  We are delighted to welcome Frances back once again.
