Overview

Portland Gallery has a proud tradition of dealing in museum quality Scottish Colourist works and we represent some of Scotland’s finest contemporary artists. We also have a keen interest in developing our reputation in dealing in mid-century Scottish modernism. Our eclectic exhibition brings together all of these threads, with a first-rate selection of privately sourced Colourist works on one floor, and a mix of post war and contemporary art displayed on our ground floor.

Our Colourist selection includes an exceptional figure painting by F.C.B. Cadell - one of our represented estates - alongside a still life painting and wonderfully atmospheric Iona view. We have a very strong group of five still life paintings by George Leslie Hunter and a charming figure study in oil by S.J. Peploe. These are accompanied by a selection of works on paper by J.D. Fergusson and a group of privately sourced French landscapes and street scenes by the '5th Colourist' - John Maclauchlan Milne.

On the ground floor we are pleased to include works by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Alan Davie, William Scott and Barbara Rae alongside familiar contemporary figures such as Frances Macdonald and Archie Forrest. Both Archie and Frances have enjoyed very successful recent exhibitions, but this presentation includes ‘new’ privately sourced works by those artists. We have also included works by artists previously associated with the gallery, including Jack Vettriano and Peter McLaren. One new name to many of you might be Glasgow born Fred Pollock, whose vibrant abstract expressionist works will also be displayed at the London Art Fair.
