Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, from her Porthmeor
beach studio, Barns-Graham explored the rhythmic movement of the sea through a
series of wave drawings. Thus began a new strand of Barns-Graham work, one that
explored the depiction of movement and energy. Speed is part of
Barns-Graham’s ‘Small Energy Series’; a collection of drawings of black, fine,
undulating lines which mimic the observation of the world around her whilst also
being something abstract.
