Alexander Goudie studied at the Glasgow School of Art under William Armour, David Donaldson and Benno Schotz. For many years he was a tutor at the school, before dedicating himself to his own studio work. This encompassed a wide range of subject matter including portraiture (painting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II), still life and landscape (heavily inspired by his travels between Glasgow and Brittany). Goudie also created ceramics and theatre design works within his practice.
Artistically, Goudie found inspiration from more traditional roots of Gauguin and Velázquez and he found inspiration from music and literature of poets and writers including fellow Scot Robert Burns and Oscar Wilde. In 1989, he was awarded a substantial commission to decorate Brittany Ferries Flagship 'Le Bretagne', creating over 300 works from large scale paintings down to the curtains, carpets and café plates which highlighted Goudie's detailed and considered creative nature, and the desire for his audience to be fully immersed in the experience of his artwork.
