Norwich Cathedral belongs to the seminal Arts Council commission to draw every English medieval cathedral. Norwich was a cathedral with Creffield responded to particularly positively. In the catalogue produced to support the touring exhibition, Creffield noted “Norwich is stunning and drawable from every position. It’s a masterpiece of proportional wholeness. From end to end and from top to bottom everything down to the smallest window is in the right place. Amazingly, this harmony was not the result of a single design as at Salisbury but the outcome of several hundred years of additions. It’s an outstanding example of the medieval English genius from improvisation.” Creffield often worked on his drawings early in the morning to avoid being overlooked by tourists and passersby. Consequently, some of his compositions show the buildings shrouded in mist and fog, including a number of the Norwich drawings.
