Barns-Graham's late acrylics on paper and canvas are among her greatest achievements as an artist. Her works from the mid 1990s through to her death in 2004 are characterised by her bold use of saturated colour and dynamic, broad brushstrokes. These late paintings, of which Two Brushstrokes is a prime example, are purely abstract but carry some of the wave patterns and echoes natural forms which repeat throughout her long and varied career. Despite her advanced age, Barns-Graham continued to innovate and develop as an artist, and was no doubt invigorated by the overwhelmingly positive response to her retrospective show at Tate St Ives between November 1999 and May 2000. Unlike many of her peers working in St Ives, Barns-Graham never resorted to repetition or mannerisms.
