This painting by Gillies is thought to be of the Rosebery reservoir, near to where the artist lived. The oil would have been painted en plein air and has been dated from the late 1940s due to the colour palette and style used by the artist from this time. We are grateful to Andrew MacPherson, author of William Gillies: Modernism and Nation in British Art for his assistance with this artwork's research.
