During the 1900s, John Duncan Fergusson became close friends with fellow Scot and artist Samuel John Peploe. They began to holiday to France in the summer, together with Peploe’s wife Margaret and son Willy. After some persuading by Fergusson, the group took their first visit to Cassis in 1913, where this drawing was created. Fergusson produced an abundance of conté portraits and nudes of women throughout his career, however this example combines his love of both still life and figurative subjects in a more formalised composition.
