Edward Seago
In
1944 Seago was invited by Field-Marshall Sir Harold Alexander to document the
war effort as an unofficial artist in Italy. The artist found the atmosphere
both fascinating
and overwhelming, creating over a hundred ink and oil works during the year.
Seago’s intention was to ‘tell a story of endurance, courage, patience and
resignation’, as he vividly recalled his experiences of the frontline with
profound emotion,
through both his writing and artworks. (E. Seago quoted in E. Seago, With the Allied
Armies in Italy, Glasgow,
1945, p. 14).
