While studying at the Slade School of Art as a mature student, Creffield paid regular visits to Greenwich to paint and draw (1957-60). He was particularly inspired to paint from the roof of the Royal Observatory, reveling in the aerial view the vantage point gave him of the river and landscape beyond. Christopher Wren's Royal Naval College became a reoccuring motif. In our drawing, Creffield has drawn the building from a very close view point, differing from his more atmospheric and panoramic landscapes of the subject. A major oil of this subject was acquired by Keble College, Oxford (the painting is now sadly lost). Of the eight paintings and drawings by Creffield in the Tate's collection, two are views of Greenwich and the Royal Naval Hospital (the other six are a group of his later cathedral drawings).
