Our beautiful watercolour of Venice by Edward Seago has a very special provenance, having been in the collection of the family of Lady Gwen Melchett for generations. The Melchett’s were Seago’s most important and ardent early supporters, and they introduced him to Venice in the early 1930s. The theme of the gondolier has a personal relevance. In a letter to Alan Delgado, Seago noted that “I am learning to ‘gondel’…. Never did I think anything could be so alive, wilful, spiteful and altogether contrary. However in spite of hitting numerous poles and other boats I am carrying on undaunted.”
