Barns-Graham’s late acrylics on paper rank amongst her greatest achievements, a period in her career where – to use her own phrase – she ‘let rip’ and through caution to the wind. The colour combinations in these purely abstract studies in colour were far from random or based solely on aesthetic choices. They are related to her synesthesia condition in which colours are associated with people, places, numbers and letters.
