“Brewster’s affection and enthusiasm for the medium of print is apparent” – Vivienne Light

Almost a year on from his first solo show with Portland Gallery, we are excited to share a series of prints by Martyn Brewster in an online viewing room presentation.

In this body of fifteen works, dating from the 1990s to the present day, a range of techniques, colour palettes and mark making are on display. His passion for the fluidity of monoprint is evident in works such as Heartsong 198 (2001) and Lowick No.117 (1994). In these works, Brewster paints and draws directly onto the silkscreen, producing varied textures and layers on each unique print.

Another medium Martyn has explored extensively in order to produce dynamic surfaces is woodcut. In prints Snowfall (2019) and Coastline, Evening Light (2022),the natural grain of the board is subtly printed and contrasted with more intentional lines of white and black. Particularly in Lightfall (2019), the vivid ombre from red to orange lifts the subtle blank spaces and gives them intention.

Although collector’s identify Brewster as a painter first and foremost, he has had a prolific career as a print-maker with extensive experience across a variety of print media. He continues to produce abstract images inspired by music, colour and the natural environment that carry aesthetic weight and emotional depth.

Martyn Brewster has his own painting and print-making studio in Bournemouth which he set up in 2002, working diligently throughout the process. Martyn has exhibited internationally, across the UK and more recently became a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

In addition, Martyn was awarded the RE. Mike Brennan Memorial print prize in 2023. His prints are in the collections of Pallant House, Ashmolean Museum, British Museum,Hepworth Wakfield and many more public and private collections.

Each of the prints are currently unframed and available to be seen on request.
