Piper produced several abstracted scenes of Bullslaughter Bay, Pembrokeshire, best known for its dramatic cliffs and rocky beach. This particular work was sold by Piper to former British solider Major Sir Edward Beddington-Behrens. After winning the military cross in 1917 and serving at Dunkirk in the Second World War, Beddington-Behrens pursued a career in business, championing the move for Britain to join Europe. He continued his mother’s patronage of the arts, supporting Stanley Spencer, Patricia Preece, Oscar Kokoschka and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, notably acquiring Gaudier-Brzeska’s The Dancer and Kokoschka’s The Crab, both now held in the Tate collection.
