Piper was particularly fond of Dorset, having first visited in the early 1920s, returning to the county over the years to record its interesting architectural and topographical features. The village of Cerne Abbas would have been particularly attractive with its ancient and historic associations and the 'Cerne Abbas Giant’, a naked figure etched into the chalk hillside. In Cerne Abbas Piper has chosen to concentrate his attention on the winding roads and buildings of the village including the back of The Royal Oak pub, built in 1540, which is still in operation today.
