This uncharacteristically small canvas depicts the buildings surrounding Leeds University with All Soul’s Church on Blackman Lane prominent in the center of the composition with its recoginsable spire silhouetted against a yellow sky. Although clearly a relatively minor work in scale, the painting is interesting for its use of colour and the staccato dabs of yellow paint, indicators of a rapidly evolving and maturing style which was inspired by his move to the city.
