'The Players' refers to a series of artworks by Bomberg created in 1919. Executed primarily in ink on paper, the series was inspired by the vibrant Pavilion Theatre in the East End of London, close to where the artist grew up. The theatre was known locally as the 'Ghetto Theatre' due to the large Jewish community and Yiddish-speaking performances held there. It was the subject of several Whitechapel Boys' artworks, including the present work and Bomberg's famous oil 'Ghetto Theatre', 1919 (Ben Uri Museum collection), which depicts an ominous post-war atmosphere inside the theatre.
