Come rain or shine, Ken Howard often depicted Saint Mark’s
Basilica in his paintings. However, it was a rarity for him to depict snow, and
this unique work underlines his masterful understanding of ever-changing light
and its influence on colour. The muted palette of the sun-lit sky and fresh
white snow settled on the domes and the piazza, is offset by splashes of red
decorating the figures; a red which creates harmony between the figures in the
foreground, and the maroons and earthy rouges of the architecture behind.
