The estuaries and waterways of Pin Mill and the Orwell allowed
Seago to explore the landscape in greater depth, as he often rented a boat to
view East Anglia from new perspectives. The merchant ships and barges
travelling through these areas also became a significant part of his practice
and Seago can be seen to paint these vessels with a grandeur and beauty. The
barges, with their flat underneath for greater maneuverability among the mudflats,
and their dark red sails dyed by the preserving agent, fascinated Seago. A
significant and historic factor within the industrial development of Britain
society, the barges blended into Seago’s perception of the British landscape.
