From
the 1970s, the figure became a central subject for Chadwick. Making the shift
from semi-abstract, iron-composite structures into welded forms cast in bronze,
the artist’s distinctive geometric male and female figures are depicted in
various expressive poses. Sitting Woman is a contemplative figure. Legs
outstretched, she sits alone, yet her pose is peaceful, confident and
commanding. She looks out towards the viewer, inviting us in to converse.
Although
only 4 ½ inches high, the work also shows Chadwick’s self-taught sculptural
process. Around the figure’s torso, a skeletal metal framework shows through.
In between, layers of stolit (a plaster-like substance) have been built up to
give the form a distinctive textured surface before being cast in bronze. As
his practice developed, Chadwick experimented further with planes, smoothing
these surfaces down to create sharper, angulated features which cut through
their surroundings. The addition of heavy cloaks shrouding or billowing against
his figures, adds a further dynamism and energy to their presence.
