'The Players' refers to a large group of artworks by Bomberg created in 1919. Executed primarily in ink on paper, the series was inspired by the vibrant Pavilion Theatre in the East End of London, close to where the artist grew up. Known colloquially as the 'Ghetto Theatre' (due to the large Jewish community and Yiddish-speaking performances held there) the theatre became a culturally important hub for locals, and the subject of several 'Whitechapel Boys'' artworks including Bomberg's famous oil 'Ghetto Theatre', 1919 (Ben Uri Museum collection), which depicts an ominous post-war atmosphere from inside the theatre.
