Sir William Reid Dick was commissioned to create a bust of Sir Winston Churchill by the Royal Academy in 1942. The Prime Minister’s obligations to his country during the Second World War meant that he was reluctant to sit for Reid Dick, however subsequently agreed following King George IV’s involvement in the matter. Reid Dick held close company with the royal family, serving as both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s Sculptor in Ordinary for Scotland from 1938 to his death in 1961.
A larger version of this bust of Churchill was also cast in an edition of nine.
