The circular forms clearly evident in this 1963 abstract composition were a relatively new motif in Feiler’s work, which had previously been more free form. Studies on paper were an important working tool for Feiler, and display his interest in bringing more order to his compositions. This drive would lead ultimately to a form of pure geometric abstraction towards the end of the 1960s. Although it would be a mistake to read the forms in this piece as representative of anything specific, a collage made of pebbles by Felier in 1963 titled ‘Supported Forms’ includes a slate disc with a seam of quartz – similar in appearance to the circular form in the top right of the composition.
