Painted in 2005, this is one of a series of works by O’Donoghue created which were inspired by Géricault’s masterpiece, The Raft of the Medusa. The image is a photographic print which has been overpainted in a variety of media. The ship that provided the main motif for this series of works was the MV Plassy - a vessel that was wrecked on the coast of Inis Oirr during a great storm in 1960. The series was an attempt by the artist to engage directly with his father’s experiences during World War Two, indeed the artist discovered the wreck whilst walking around the island with his father.
