Painted in 1947 while Gear resided in Paris, Untitled embraces the artist’s early interests surrounding nature and abstract painting. Gear distanced himself from the influences of the American Abstract Expressionists, preferring to align with the École de Paris and the CoBrA avant-garde movement, of which he became a member. In Untitled, bold fragments of colour come together and overlap (on both sides of the sheet) to create a highly Expressionist landscape in an early embodiment of CoBrA’s manifesto, which focussed on primitivism, experimentation and spontaneity of painting without restraint.
