Much like his father, Edward developed a passion for watercolour painting. During his studies at Bath Academy of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art, he became particularly inspired by the vibrant Impressionist paintings of Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy. In contrast to John’s dramatic architectural and post-war scenes, Edward was drawn primarily to the female nude, using fluid line and bright colour to portray his figures with a sense of vivacity.
