Encouraged by J. D Fergusson, in 1910, Peploe visited Royan in
south-western France with his wife. The bustling, colourful harbour, sweeping
promenade, and magnificent casino, collective with it being the birthplace of
his son, made Royan a rich source of inspiration for a new phase in Peploe’s
painting. Moving beyond his earlier still lifes and figurative works that
characterised his career during the turn of the 20th century, Peploe
leant into Impressionism. Working en plein air, he harnessed the
brilliant light of Royan by experimenting with the application of paint
straight from the tube, and fluid, vivid brushstrokes.
