John Maclauchlan Milne lived on the Scottish Isle of Arran from the 1940s until the end of his life. He regularly painted landscape scenes of the area in an Impressionistic manner: depicting the island with vibrant tones, much like his contemporaries painting in France at the time. This painting is no exception as Milne illuminates the boats, water and distinctive Arran Whitebeam trees with layers of rich colour. Ferry Rock, Arran was acquired directly from Milne’s studio and has remained in the same family collection since, unseen by the public until now.
