Julian Trevelyan’s painting style varies considerably over his lifetime, though influence from the French Surrealist movement had a profound effect on his practice from the 1930s onwards. In this London scene looking towards Richmond Railway Bridge and Twickenham Bridge, Trevelyan captures the urban landscape with a whimsical dreamlike quality. Trevelyan’s home and studio (which he shared with wife and fellow artist Mary Fedden) was located close by at Durham Wharf, and was a source of inspiration for several of his paintings.
