For a recipient of the Tonks Drawing Prize at the Slade, Spiller wilfully embraced a style which he described as painterly and naïve. He rejects perfection in representation for something more personal, more expressive, and more real. Our selection of drawings, largely from the 1980s, echo (but don’t imitate) the New York street artists such as Haring and Basquiat. Spiller’s densely worked sheets are a palimpsest of pop culture and abstract mark making.
