One of Seago’s favourite locations to paint in France was
the town of Honfleur in Normandy. Between 1951 and 1967 the artist took several
trips to Paris in his own yacht Capricorn, sailing along the river
Seine and stopping to paint along the way at Dieppe, Rouen, Honfleur and other
smaller towns. Already a known haven for artists including Impressionists
Claude Monet and Eugène Boudin, Seago relished painting the bustling fishing
and market scenes and historic buildings of Honfleur, producing several
paintings from this location including the present oil, where he captures the
sunlit promenade of houses and shimmering water in the port of the Vieux
Bassin.
