This oil has been in the collection of the family of Lady Gwen Melchett for generations. The Melchett’s were Seago’s most important and ardent early supporters, introducing him to Venice in the early 1930s. The painting depicts Maria, the family's cook and her daughter standing outside Casa Leone (Baron and Lady Melchett's Venetian home) where Seago stayed on his visit.
Casa Leone was later leased to Dirk Bogarde while filming Luchino Visconti's 1971 film adaptation of Death in Venice.
