The painting depicts the historical London gates of Moorgate, Aldersgate, Temple Bar, King's Gate and Bishopsgate. It is a preparatory painting for a tapestry which Piper created and was woven by the Edinburgh Tapestry Company. The final design was hung in the offices of The Whitechapel Group Building, Aldgate (formally Sedgwick Group). Another version of the 'Five Gates' was used for Piper's 1978 editioned screenprint.
