The listed building of Stowe House, Buckinghamshire and its surrounding grounds was one of John Piper’s favourite locations to visit. From the 1940s, as part of his contribution to the War Artists' Advisory Committee series ‘Recording Britain’ Piper captured several features of the house and gardens in paint, print and photographs. He continued to visit Stowe for many years after the war, publishing a book solely on the subject in 1983. Created in 1981, Stowe Fantasy showcases Piper’s diverse use of media, utilising watercolour, pencil and wax resist to create a dreamlike mural-style scene. Here, we can see many of the important architectural features of the garden depicted, including The Pebble Alcove and The Congreve Monument, which Piper illustrated on many occasion.
