Ross Ryan is a contemporary artist who utilises his extensive knowledge of the west coast of Scotland and his life as a commercial skipper to influence his paintings of seascapes.

Ryan studied at the Grays School of Art in Aberdeen (1993-1997) where he received The St Fittick Prize for Printmaking. He has exhibited with The Scottish Gallery for a number of years and has also shown internationally since graduating in 1997.

Following in the footsteps of his artist mother Frances Macdonald, Ryan has a studio overlooking Crinan Harbour. Continuously inspired by the spectacular southwest views, Ryan has always found a balance between his life as a painter and a sailor. Often painting outside on the deck of his 1947 fishing boat The Sgarbh, Ross Ryan has also explored the seas further afield in Poland, Finland and Ecuador. His gestural painting technique captures the uncertainty of the waves that so many are drawn to.
