Sir William George Gillies CBE RA was a renowned Scottish landscape and still life painter.

 

Gillies studied at the Edinburgh College of Art which was interrupted from 1917 to 1919 by military service requirement. He was later awarded a travelling scholarship by the ECA which he used to study in Paris and Italy before settling back home in Scotland. In 1947, Gillies was an elected member of the Royal Scottish Academy and later was awarded a CBE for his service to Art in Scotland (1957).
