The story of Saint Jerome who is usually depicted in a
library with the lion from whose paw he pulled a thorn whilst living as a
hermit in the desert. Jerome is the patron saint of reading, books, spectacle
wearers, archaeologists, archivists and school children. He’s often shown with a
skull (which symbolises his contemplation of Man’s mortality), an owl, a
cardinal’s red hat and a book. Libraries feel as relevant a subject as ever today
when many are closing so here is my bid to protect at least this one.
