I do have a need to work on larger scale pieces too. ‘And So
It Came To Pass’ seemed to be an apt title for this canvas that seemed to grow
subconsciously. I had the idea that I wanted to paint a large white horse – he
felt rather ethereal so his rider also needed to be. I knew I wanted to include
a hare with all its symbolism but the badger seemed to creep in of its own
accord and then the fox, the stoat, the deer, the hedgehog, the owl and the
birds. As I paint quite intuitively I chipped away at the edge of the grass and
there appeared the white cliff, creating a void which could even be between
this world and the next. It feels quintessentially English to me and as I have
surrounded this little part of an island with sea, I wanted to fill it with
whales and dolphins leaping in the water.
