John Piper
Piper purchased a studio in the southwest of Wales in 1962, where he created numerous lyrical works of the Pembrokeshire coast near Garn Fawr and Tretio. The 60s and 70s saw a new-found energy and emotion for the region, and Piper reflected this powerfully within abstracted compositions and animated brushstrokes of intense colour: elements also found in his stained-glass window designs produced at the same time. In a letter known to have accompanied this work, Piper writes: 'The gouache by me of Tretio Pembrokeshire is wrongly dated (also by me) ix/71 when it was signed. It should have been dated ix/70' (J.Piper, 7 April 1971).
