Executed two years before Minton’s tragic suicide at the age of 39, The Prospect is a poignant reflection of Adrienne Cecile Rich’s poem of the same name (attached to the reverse of the work). This illustration was commissioned by Saul Shapiro, Montreal, for a privately published Illustrated Anthology of Poetry compiled in 1962. Other artists involved in the commission include Ceri Richards, Kenneth Armitage and Ruskin Spear. Minton’s declining mental health and the discrimination of homosexual artists at the time meant that his impact on the British Art scene was often overlooked, however is today considered one of the most significant artists, illustrators and book designers for Neo-Romantic Art.
